Upon the release of the pilot of Hazbin Hotel on October 28, 2019, we’ve been introduced to two dynamic characters, Angel Dust and Cherri Bomb. The friendship between the porn star and the explosives-enthusiast is as chaotic as it sounds. In this analysis, we’re going to dissect this iconic friendship and see if we can learn a thing or two from their relationship.
What We Know So Far
On their debut, they are seen participating in a turf war, wreaking havoc across the streets of hell. They are said to have the best friends and partners-in-crime kind of relationship. Cherri Bomb even states that he’s her favorite guy to party with. However, underneath all the excitement and fun, there is more to their friendship than just mischief. That depth is explored in the new music video posted on Vivziepop’s channel called “Addict”. The song gives us insight into issues they are struggling with and how their friendship relates to these issues.
Barely a minute into Angel Dust’s performance and we can already sense something’s wrong. Flashes appear that show him laying in his bed and visibly traumatized. Cherri Bomb can be seen by his side comforting him. These flashes tell us that Cherri cares about Angel and that Angel has a lot of trust in Cherri. Later in the song, it’s revealed that his boss, Valentino, is most likely the catalyst for his problems. This is evident when Angel’s boss forces himself onto him, suggesting that they have a sexually abusive relationship. Cherri knows this as she’s seen throwing bombs at Valentino’s billboard, expressing disregard to the figure due to his abusive behavior towards her best friend.
It’s very obvious that the two care a lot about one another, however, I can’t help but speculate if there’s also potentially some problematic undertones within their friendship.
Cherri’s Role in the Friendship
While I’m sure that Cherri cares for Angel, I have a feeling that she enables his self-destructive behavior. While I don’t blame her for Angel’s drug addiction, I don’t feel like she’s pushing him enough to overcome it. According to the creator, Vivziepop, Cherri taught Angel how to handle weapons and explosives. She likely did so because she just wanted her good ol’ pal to partake in her antics. However, part of the reason why could be that destroying things helped her cope with her problems and assumed it’d have the same effect on Angel.
In the music video, we also get to see that she struggled with someone from her past, presumably her ex-boyfriend. Based on the lyrics that she sang, it’s likely that she used to be in the same position as Angel, abused by someone rich and powerful. She likely thought that if they both could distract themselves with these antics, they wouldn’t have to think about their issues.
Angel’s Role in the Friendship
Angel is most likely the one in the friendship to introduce Cherri to drugs. I might be misinterpreting the song but as far as I remember, the two had stated that they are addicted to a feeling in the music video (which could reference their drug usage). I’m sure he had no ill-intentions, but encouraging her to do drugs only gives temporary pleasure and it keeps her from properly dealing with their issues.
It also seems like Angel isn’t the most comforting type, so he probably resorted to recommending drugs because it’s what helped him cope and it’s just a lot easier than getting sentimental. Though it’s also likely that he could be emotionally supportive, but isn’t the best role model for self-improvement.
I’d also imagine him living in the hotel might cause a rift between the two. On the road to redemption, he’d have to give up some of the things that made him such a great company to Cherri. Vaggie’s reaction to him helping her with the turf war wasn’t positive. This could mean he has to stop participating in her antics and that could cause strain in their friendship. On the other hand, she might be supportive and maybe even encouraging her friend’s newfound path. But as of now, we can’t know and there’s a lot of room for their friendship to develop throughout the series.
I love these two, I think that they are a monumental duo and it’s quite obvious they love each other very much. Because of their shared struggle, they understand each other better than anyone. But as with any friendship, there are healthy and unhealthy aspects to it. I had so much fun analyzing and theorizing about the potential of the close bond they share. What do you think about the duo? Do you relate to them in any kind of way? Does their friendship remind you of one that you used to have or are having right now?
