I remember back in 2014 when I finished Mirai Nikki ( Future Diary) I began hunting anything related to it. During the process, I stumbled across an abundance of Seinen shows that looked extremely appealing to me. One of them was Btooom!. The official cover of the anime looked infatuating and so was the plot summary. So, I told myself ” let’s give this one a try “. And boy, it was a fine ride. The only issue I’m having with the anime right now is the lack of a second season. Nevertheless, we can always check out the manga if one cannot hold on much longer. So, is Btooom! worth it? come read all about it below!
First of all, Btooom! is an adaptation of the manga with the same name. The manga received an adaptation back in June 2012 by studio Madhouse known for their titles such as One Punch Man, Hunter x Hunter 2011, and Kiseijuu. The anime would receive 26 episodes, but since then nothing was heard of a potential second season.
Story summary of Btooom!
The story focus on Ryouta Sakamoto, a 22 year old, who is known as one of the best players in the bomb-throwing video game Btooom!. One day, he awakens to find himself alone in an exotic island. As he walks around and checking the surroundings, he sees someone laying on the ground. The moment Ryouta tries to call for help, the stranger throws a bomb at him. It is at that moment where the protagonist realizes that his life is on the line, and that he’s indeed trapped inside his favourite game. What has been a virtual world, has become a reality.
As the events progresses, he encounters Ryouta’s in-game wife, Himiko. They will both try to survive together this hellish game and go back home no matter what the cost.
What I liked about the story is how anyone in the plot is selfish. Except Ryouta and Himiko who are honest to each other. Others will do anything under their sleeve to survive even if it means sacrificing their comrades.

Art and Music in Btooom!
As expected, anything Madhouse produces looks sick. The animation is top-notch, as well as, the art direction. If you’re a Seinen fan, then you’re in for a nice treat. Madhouse has done a great job in depicting what it feels to be stuck in an island with psychopaths who know nothing but bomb each other in order to win. If you ask me, the plot is kind of similar to Mirai Nikki. Both Himiko and Ryouta will try anything under their belt to survive the hellish world they were sent into. The anime is all about survival, and how it depicts the selfishness of humanity. Unfortunately, the main character is one of those selfish beings. However, with each new episodes, his character starts to grow up, and he begins to see things from a different perspective.
On the other hand, the voice acting is decent, but all the lights are directed towards our waifu, Himiko. I should inform you that something nice happens in the first episode which will I think will pick your interest. (Maybe). There are some well-known voice actors on this anime, such as: Hongo, Kanata, Mimori, Suzuko, Kira, Kousuke. Lastly, there’s the opening (No Pain no Game) which is performed by nano (J-Pop).

The overall reception to the anime wasn’t anything good to be hopeful for. The BTOOOM! Blu-ray/DVD discs only sold 338 copies in Japan despite becoming popular internationally. Meanwhile, In MyAnimeList the anime holds a score of 7.40/10, which is kind of impressive. However, there are mixed reviews. Some users claim that the anime is worth the time, while others disagree by stating that the anime suffers from several flaws that point out to the main character.
Is Btooom! Worth it?
After you have read all of this, the question that is now ringing inside your head is ” But is it worth it? ”. The answer is yes. If you are looking for something similar to the likes of Mirai Nikki, DeadMan Wonderland, or Battle Royale, then Btooom! is one fine anime for you. The first episode in the anime starts magnificently, resulting in capturing your interest from the get-go. Let us pray to see the second season of this show anytime soon.
